Troy Mumpower

Troy Bolden Mumpower, age 70, of Bristol, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Born on August 21, 1947, in Bristol, Virginia, he was the son of the late Troy Bolden Mumpower, Sr. and Helen Jordan Mumpower.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, James (Jim) Mumpower and a sister, Alyce Rankin.

Survivors include his wife of fifteen years, Leslie Mumpower of the home; sons, Jason Mumpower and wife Alicia of Bristol, Tennessee and Adam Mumpower and wife Deirdre of Indian Trail, North Carolina; step-sons, Tommy (TJ) Childress of Bristol, Tennessee and Sam Pippin of the home; four grandchildren, Brock Mumpower, Macie Mumpower, Jack Mumpower and Maxwell (Max) Bolden Mumpower; a sister, Betty Booher of Bristol, Tennessee; former wife Catherine (Cathy) Wolfenbarger and husband Carl of Bristol, Tennessee as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School.  He was retired from Office Machines & Supply Co. where he spent nearly 40 years serving customers across Upper East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.  Some of his best friends through the years began as customers or coworkers in his business life.

He was of the Christian faith and in his younger years he attended Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church serving as a Deacon and as a special friend to the late Pastor Willard B. Tallman.  His greatest accomplishment was introducing his sons to the church and raising them in a Christian household.

He was an avid Republican and very much enjoyed volunteering in party activities and supporting Republican candidates.  He also enjoyed serving as a Viking Booster and working the gate at Bristol Tennessee High School football games.

Troy was a loving and supporting father to his sons and encouraged them in all their activities whether it be sporting events, campaigning for public office or the ministry.  He often said their success was his success.  He took a great interest in his grandchildren’s lives and served them well as “Poppy”.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  They take great comfort in knowing that he had a sincere faith and relationship with Jesus Christ.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018, at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol, Tennessee.  Funeral services will follow in the chapel with the Reverend Steve Playl officiating.  The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to King University, 1350 King College Road, Bristol, TN 37620.  A scholarship will be established in his name to support a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School who, just like his sons, chooses to attend King.
