Wilma Louise Maxwell Smith, age 95, passed away Friday, August 29, 2025. She was born March 16, 1930 in Laurel Bloomery, TN to the late Frank and Ella Maxwell. In addition to her parents Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, David Glen Smith who passed away in 1979; sister, Helen Maxwell Crowder; and infant brother, Earl Ray Maxwell.

Before her declining health, Wilma was involved in her church, First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, and liked participating at the Johnson County Senior Center. She enjoyed working in her yard and garden work, and was an avid reader and supporter of the Johnson County Public Library. Wilma stayed active in the hiking club, historical society, and also volunteered at Heritage Hall. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Debbie Smith Waller and husband Mike, Karen Smith Garland and husband David; son, David Glen Smith II and companion Jessica Cornett; sisters, Ruth Maxwell Smith, Carol Maxwell Shoun Holler; brother, Dean Maxwell and wife Diana; grandchildren, Alan Waller, Adam Waller and wife Katie, Courtney Garland, Preston Garland, Brantlee Garland, Bethany Garland, Carli Smith, Calli Smith; great-grandchildren, Benton Waller and Emi Kate Waller; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Don Morris and Reverend John Crabtree officiating. The graveside service and burial will immediately follow at Phillippi Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wilma’s grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Wilma’s memory to these organizations that were special to her, First United Methodist Church, the Johnson County Public Library, Johnson County Senior Center, or Johnson County Rescue Squad.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their excellent care and support as well as Joan Lundblab.
