Susie Rice Staff, 84, of Suffolk, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2026. Born on January 15, 1942, in Mountain City, Tennessee, Susie was the daughter of the late Ike Lundy and Minnie Crowder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Tammy Mecke; her son, Gary South; her grandson, Joshua Wimberly; her sisters, Willa Dean Lewis, Magretha Lewis, and Frances Dick; and her brothers, Hyte Crowder and Kenneth Crowder.
Above all else, Susie loved the Lord Jesus Christ. A faithful member of Anchor Baptist Church in Portsmouth, she was never ashamed to speak about her Savior. Whether talking with family, friends, or someone she had just met, Susie loved to share the things of God and encourage others with the truths of His Word. Her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 39:4: "LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am."
Susie never met a stranger. She loved meeting new people, enjoyed long conversations, and had a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten any room. Those who knew her will remember her as a woman who was faithful in her walk with God, joyfully devoted to her family, and feisty enough to keep everyone on their toes. Her warm heart, contagious laughter, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on everyone blessed to know her.
Nothing brought Susie greater joy than her family. She loved each one deeply and treasured every opportunity to spend time together. Her children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and especially her many nieces and nephews were among her greatest earthly blessings, and they knew they were dearly loved.
She is survived by her son, Robert Staff (Jennifer); her daughters, Tina South, Kimberly Quimby (Ben); her sister, Peggy Colemary (Dave); her brother, Gene Crowder; her sister-in-law, Joyce Crowder; her grandchildren, Ty Quimby, Ben Quimby II, Ryleigh Staff, and Brittney Wimberly; her great-granddaughter, Mahlina Wimberly; and several beloved nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her memory.
A graveside service celebrating Susie's life and the blessed hope she had in Christ will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Reece Memorial Cemetery in Mountain City, Tennessee.
Though her family grieves her passing, they rejoice in the promise of the Gospel and find comfort in knowing that Susie is now in the presence of the Lord she faithfully loved, served, and spoke about throughout her life. Her testimony lives on in the many lives she touched, and her greatest desire remains the same - that others would come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.”
