Sara Joan Trathen, 86, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on June 21, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. She was born near Hillsburgh, Ontario, to Wallace and Etta Nodwell, and grew up there with her two older brothers, Gordon and Edwin, whom she adored.
She met her husband, Bill, while in nursing school in Toronto, and they were married in September 1961. Together they shared 64 years of marriage, relocating to the U.S. in 1964 and ultimately settling in Boone, NC, and, subsequently, Mountain City, TN. They shared a deep love of travel and enjoyed many adventures around the world, most recently in Panama this past winter.
Joan was known for her warmth, humor, and many talents—among them quilting, music, gardening, nursing, and homemaking. She delighted in making people feel welcome in her home and operated a bed and breakfast at the Butler House for many years. She was active in the community everywhere she lived, most recently playing a key role in the revitalization of Heritage Hall, participating in the Music Club, and providing invaluable assistance to the Lion’s Club Turtle Derby.
Joan was a friend to all, easing burdens with her kindness, and was deeply beloved by her family. She is survived by her husband, Bill; her children, Lauren Trathen, and Marcus Trathen (Elizabeth) of Raleigh, NC; and her grandchildren, Kate Trathen (Praveen Wunnava) and Jack Trathen.
Services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in memory of Joan be made to Heritage Hall (heritagehalltheatre.org), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund.
Joan will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
The family of Sara Joan Trathen has entrusted her care to Mountain City Funeral Home, 224 S. Church Street, Mountain City, Tennessee 37683.
