Mr. Mortimer Mather ‘Mort’ Johns, age 90, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at the Watauga Medical Center. He was born on March 24, 1929 in Essex, Connecticut to the late David Mortimer Johns and Margaret Mary Buxton Johns.  In addition to his parents, Mort was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline and Anne and one brother, John.

He was a 1948 graduate of Pratt High School.  Following high school he enlisted in the Air Force and honorably served during the Korean War.  After serving in the Air Force Mort moved to California and worked in Data Processing as Manager.  He met his future wife Donna there and they were married December 21, 1968 in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California.  They later moved to Blowing Rock, North Carolina where they owned and operated a motel from 1981 - 1992.

Mort enjoyed flying and had earned his Pilot license.  He owned a Cessna for many years and loved to take friends and family flying. 

Mort was a proud member of the Johnson County Honor Guard and Lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.  He was the former Finance Officer for the American Legion, former Treasurer for the Johnson County Republican Party and was a Rotarian.

Mort was a member of Mountain City First United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 50 years, Donna Jean Holten Johns; brother, Roger E. Johns and wife Dottie; special nieces, Cindy Mayo and Amy Lacey; several more nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5-6:00 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral service will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Minister Scott Wilkes to officiate. Special music will be provided by Carol Huff and Marie Jo and Richard Thum.  Graveside service and interment with military honors conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park.  Johnson County Honor Guard will also serve as pallbearers.

For those who wish, there will be a meal served following the graveside service at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
