Listen to Obituary

Melvin Sidney Blevins went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on July 12, 2026. He passed peacefully at his home in Green Cove, Virginia, surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old.

Melvin was born in Green Cove, Virginia on July 12, 1942 to the late John D. Blevins and Mary Alice Severt Blevins.

Melvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed being with all of his family and friends, always telling a good story and making those around him laugh. One of the many ways he created memories with his family was through his joy of fishing. He also enjoyed motorcycles, baseball, and especially having fun with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Melvin was a master carpenter. He took pride in his work and was blessed to work alongside his father, brothers, and sons, building many homes throughout Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland. The most special home he built was the one that he shared with his wife, Louise and the family they raised together.

Melvin was a former member of the Mount Rogers Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He volunteered many hours to his community, helping those in need.

Melvin was a devout Christian, serving as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Green Cove Missionary Baptist Church for many years. He prioritized raising his family in church and lived his faith daily.

In addition to his parents, Melvin is preceded in death by his siblings Christine Blevins, Joan Blevins, Lorraine Blevins, Lloyd Blevins, and brother-in-law Fred Holliday.

Melvin is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Louise Blevins. He is also survived by their four children, David Blevins of the home, Diana Morefield (Bill) of Mountain City, TN, Rick Blevins (Judy) of Troutdale, VA, and James Blevins (Angie) of Damascus, VA; ten grandchildren, Samantha Young, D.J. Blevins, Jordan Johnson (Keri), Justin Mullins (Kristin), Rebecca Jackson (Josh), Nikki Hayton (Ryan), Miranda Morgan (Chase), Emily Phillips (Tanner), Sara Dennison (Jordan), Mark Blevins; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Holliday; brothers, Steve Blevins (Connie), Johnny Blevins (Cathy), Terry Blevins and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at Green Cove Missionary Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Bill Morefield and Leonard Tenney to officiate. Burial will follow the funeral at the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from his grandsons.
