Josephine “Jo” Howard Caraway died August 20, 2024. She was born July 6, 1934 to the late Thomas A. “Gus” and Ruth Shipe Howard.
Jo was educated in Tennessee public schools and received her B.S. and M.S. degree in education from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She taught in public schools in Atlanta, GA; Sullivan, Knox, and Johnson Counties; Etowah and Alcoa, TN city schools and Carroll County, VA. After retirement she volunteered in the Johnson County Schools, the senior center of Mountain City and the First United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women during her life.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, and brothers, Tom Howard and Charles Howard. She is survived by her two sons, Brian Caraway and wife, Renee of Maryville, TN and Wendell Caraway of Mountain City; two grandchildren, Joshua of Lynchburg, VA and Kelsey of Lebanon, TN; sister-in-law, Aleta White Howard of Huntsville, AL; brother-in-law, James Caraway and wife Karinsue of FL and several nephews and nieces in Huntsville, AL and East TN.
A private committal service will be held at a later date at First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Project Access (P.O. Box 973, Johnson City, TN 37605).
The family of Jo Caraway has entrusted her services to Mountain City Funeral Home, 224 S. Church Street, Mountain City, TN 37683.
