Barbara JoAnn Atwood, age 83, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on June 17, 2026. JoAnn was born October 31, 1942 to the late Elmer and Bernice Payne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Payne.

JoAnn dedicated over 60 years to her career as a hairdresser, touching the lives of many with her skill. She had a passion for cooking and cherished hosting large holiday meals, bringing family and loved ones together around the table. Always generous and caring, Joann was known for her constant readiness to help those around her. She enjoyed watching Fox News and had a sweet tooth for chocolate. Above all, her strong faith in Jesus shone through in her loving kindness and devotion to her family and friends and through all her health problems she was never afraid. She was a member of Hammons Chapel Church but attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for over 60 years.

She was a wonderful wife of 60 years to Blake Atwood; mother to Tanya Atwood (Tim Payne); grandmother to Shea Snyder (Dawson); great grandmother to her newest family member, Callie Snyder. She was also known as Momma Jo to many. Special nieces and nephew include Sheila Fenner, Sandra Herron, Shannon Payne; special friend, Judith Shull; special tiny friend, Charlotte Finley; siblings, Tom Payne, Bill Payne (Frances), Betty Vaught (Ray); several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. The graveside service and burial will follow at the church cemetery with Pastors Bill Worley and Will Kerley officiating and special prayers by Frank Bass and Josh Giddings. Pallbearers will be Jacob Vaught, Shannon Payne, Sam Adams, JL Hamby, Jody Hawkins, Kevin Shelton and Dawson Snyder. Honorary pallbearers are Terry Reece, Frank Bass, Tommy Neatherly, Jeff Miller, and Steve Atwood.

The family would like to thank the deacons of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for all their love and support. A special thanks to her dearest friends for all the calls, messages, and food, also for Judith Shull’s prayer chain.

The family of Barbara JoAnn Atwood has entrusted her services to Mountain City Funeral Home, 224 S. Church Street, Mountain City, Tennessee 37683.
