Joan Croteau, 79

Joan Croteau, of Creston, NC, passed away on September 15, 2026 after a long struggle with cancer. She is survived by her sister Lillie Schoolfield; brother in-law Don; niece Stacey; great nephew Tralen; friends and remote relatives.

Joan had lived in Ashe County for over 20 years, but had spent most of her adult life living in Durham, NC, area and working as a technical editor/writer in the Research Triangle Park.

It was the natural beauty of Ashe that drew her to the county after retirement and she loved her time here- whether bird-watching from her back deck, hiking, woodland trails with her friends, walking her dogs, or just wandering about her neighbors' farms and pastures.

Joan was also a lover of animals and books, and was an active volunteer at Ashe Humane Society and Ashe Public Library. In recent years, she was also involved in Creston community activities, including Ashe Outreach Ministries.

No service is planned. However, memorial donations, may be made to Ashe Humane ( P.O. Box 1776, West Jefferson, NC 28694); Friends of Ashe County Public Library (148 Library Drive, West Jefferson, NC 28694); or Ashe Outreach Ministries ( P.O. Box 157, Creston, NC).
