Hazel W. Gentry

Hazel Wilson Gentry, age 86, of Mountain City, TN, went to rest with her Lord on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on February 24, 1938 in Glade Springs, VA to the late Thomas Isaac Wilson and Esther Barr Wilson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two of her sisters, Helen Brooks and Kathryn Baker, and her two brothers, Warren Wilson and Homer Wilson. She is survived by her husband, Bill M. Gentry; one son, Patrick John Gentry and wife Jeanne of Richmond VA; one daughter, Donna Gentry Leahy and husband Kevin of Fredericksburg, VA; sisters Mary Roten Grindstaff, Betty and husband Buss Wright, and Joan Smith. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ashley Hunt and husband Tim; Kelsey Gentry; Reilly Leahy and Colin Leahy, as well as by her great-grandchildren Aiden and Wesley Hunt and several nieces and nephews.

Hazel and Bill married in 1962 in Mountain City, TN. Bill’s Army career took them around the country, from Massachusetts, Florida and Hawaii to northern Virginia, where they settled in Manassas. There she would raise a family, work in the Prince William County Public School System and at Prince William Hospital. Hazel was a devoted church member her entire life. She knew her Bible thoroughly and shared her knowledge and time at Loch Lomond Baptist Church in Manassas, VA and at Valley View Methodist Church in Mountain City, TN for close to thirty years before her death. She held the church and its community close to her heart and enjoyed volunteering and fellowship with the United Methodist Women’s Group. Hazel had an extraordinary work ethic; no matter what she did, she devoted her entire energy to it. She believed deeply in fulfilling her responsibilities and was the best example of perseverance and dedication that anyone could ever have.
