Cynthia Evelyn Gentry, age 102, passed away December 1, 2025 at Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born August 15, 1923 to the late Whitelaw Dent Johnson, Sr. and Una Louisa Arney Johnson. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Therman Gentry in 2018.
A lifelong resident of Johnson County and the eldest of seven siblings, she was born in the Johnson Hollow community where she lived on the family farm during the Great Depression years. Evelyn was the first of her family to attend Johnson County High School and married shortly afterwards. During World War II, Evelyn served the war effort by working at munitions factories in Virginia and Maryland but returned to Johnson County to build a home and start a farm in 1948. Evelyn worked for Levi Strauss & Co. for twenty years. She raised four children while her husband worked remotely for the TVA. Evelyn maintained a huge garden each and every year, made numerous quilts and afghans, and worked on the family farm raising tobacco, hay, and cattle.
Those left to cherish her memories include her children, Carolyn Davis of Rose Hill, VA, Ted Gentry of Mountain City, Becky Gentry of Mountain City, and Scott Gentry of Mountain City; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Lovell and husband Carroll Frank; and several nieces and nephews.
