Emogene Combs Swift, age 92, passed away Monday, September 7, 2026 at her home. Emogene was born June 10, 1934 to the late Manuel Franklin Combs and McClora Parsons Combs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Doran Swift Sr; son, Doran “Doc” Swift Jr.; grandson, Doran “Dokken” Swift; sisters, Mary Asbury, Margaret Mosier, Melissa Michael, Irene Mosier; brothers, Arthur Combs, Henry Combs, Robert Combs, and Paul Combs Sr.
Emogene was one of eleven children and grew up in the depression years. She held many jobs during her lifetime including jobs at Mollie Shoun’s Café, Courtesy Drug Store, where she met the love of her life, Doran Swift, and later Burlington Industries. In 1990, she went back to school to earn a nursing degree as an LPN where she held many positions in the local medical field until her final retirement at the age of 76.
After retirement she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, planting a garden with her husband, raising tobacco, horses, cattle, sheep and other animals on their farm. They did trail rides, wagon trains, the local horse shows, the JC Trailriders, JC Rescue Squad, church work, and traveling all over the US and a few European countries.
She was never content sitting still and loved experiencing life with her family. She cared and dedicated her life to helping and caring for others long before she was officially a nurse. That strong work ethic, drive to be active and care for others was with her until her last days. She loved and supported her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with a fierce determination all her life. Her inner strength, determination, an innate talent of caring for others, and most of all her faith in God always brought her through adversity and challenges. She was a member of Mountain City Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. She was faithful in serving her church alongside her husband in many capacities. She was a strong believer in the power of prayer. She will be greatly missed.
Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Pamela Swift Hacker of the home; grandchildren, Abby Hacker (Wayne), Jesse Hacker, Sarah Jennings (Mark); great-grandchildren, Matthew Swift, Taylor Swift, Zoey Swift, Mckenzie Jennings, Lucas Jennings; sister, Josephine Davis; one brother-in-law, four sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews and her special cat, Rascal.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Steve Playl, Rev. James Morley and Rev. Bud Branscomb officiating. Special music will be provided by Sherri Tester and Carol Huff. The graveside service and burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mark Jennings, Matthew Swift, Dan Parsons, Jesse Hacker, Mike Skewes and Adam Hampton.
