Connie Payne Matherly

Connie Payne Matherly, age 67, of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a long courageous battle with cancer on July 5, 2026 at her home on the mountain where she used to romp through the woods or sneak off down in the holler espicially when her cousins would show up. She was born June 1, 1959 to the late Worley and Mabel Payne. In addition to her parents, Connie was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Heather Stanley Payne. 

Connie was a member of First Christian Church. She began her work career at a young age working from JD's Dairy Bar to Phoenix Medical. Connie was a loving wife, mother, nana, and friend. Her husband, kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and her fur baby Mable were her everything. Connie also enjoyed talking on the phone with her close cousins, Rose Mary, Virginia, Betsy and Patsy. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 43 years, Eric (Gordy) Matherly; son, Jeff Payne; daughter, Brandy Voss and husband Bryan; grandchildren, Vincent Matherly and wife Caitlin, Vanessa Mullins and husband Rob, Jennifer Matherly and fiance Connor Houston, Dalton Matherly, Brady Matherly; great grandchildren, Waylon Robertson, Aaron Matherly, Cain Mullins, Walker Houston and coming in September, Wyatt Mullins; brothers, Greg Payne and wife Wanda and Gary Payne and wife Tenia; nieces and nephews, Celia Pennington, Caroline Payne, Seth Payne and Aaron Payne; several cousins also survive.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2026 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with David Smith to officiate. Special music will be provided by grandson Dalton Matherly  Burial will follow from Cress Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jackie Pennington, Tim Laws, Eric Hill, Seth Payne, Aaron Payne, and Marty Pennington. Honorary pallbearers will be Vincent Matherly, Dalton Matherly, Brady Matherly, Connor Houston, and Rob Mullins. 

The family would like to thank, Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center, The Johnson County Rescue Squad, Ballad Home Health, Bristol Regional Hospital, Johnson County Community Hospital and Gentiva Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Connie's memory may make a donation to help her daughter Brandy and son Jeff with funeral expenses.
