Charlie E. Martin, age 93, of Laurel Bloomery, TN, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday morning, May 2, 2025 surrounded by his loving family at home. Charlie was born in Damascus, VA on February 19, 1932 to the late W.T. Martin and Sophia Roe Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Tommy Martin (Libby), Lemuel “Duck” Martin, Gary (Warren) Wilson, Martha Jammes.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Ruth Morefield Martin; children Kimberly Border (Tim), Karen Martin, Charles Martin (Mary); Grandchildren, Tim, Diana (Tom), Evan (Chloe), Charly (Eric); Great grandchildren, Myka, Carson and Morgan; Sister Kathleen Schumacher (Larry), Brother Bobby Martin (Jane); Brother-in-law Dennis Jammes who was like a brother, and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie served in the US Army from 1949-1957 and retired from the US Postal Service after 28 years.
Charlie spent countless hours carving in his shop and all were amazed by his self-taught skill but what brought him the most joy was giving them away with his favorite verse inscribed-Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. The greatest legacy he leaves is his love of sharing his testimony of how the Lord changed his life, his daily Bible studies and strong prayer life.
Charlie was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church where he taught the men’s Sunday School Class for many years.
We will be eternally grateful for the compassionate care and for the unforgettable friendships formed with those who cared for him: Ballad Health Cancer Care Abingdon, Amedisys Home Health Mountain City and Gentiva Hospice.
A visitation will be held from 2-3:30 on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at Mountain City Funeral with funeral services immediately following officiated by Pastor Steven Spencer. Burial will take place at State Line Cemetery, Laurel Bloomery, following the service. Pallbearers will be Bobby Martin, Evan Martin, Darrell Martin, Tim Border II, Randy Eller, Tom Rothermund, Eric Casey, Dennis Jammes.
