Dayton Ray Payne Dayton Ray Payne, age 78, of Mountain City, went home to be with his Lord, on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at his residence. He was born on December 7, 1935 to the late James Dayton Payne and Eunice Curd Payne. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by a special grandson, Kevin James (Jake) Cable, infant brother, Robert Smith Payne, and a sister, Jolene Payne Stout. Ray was a Veteran of the United States Army and honorably served in Germany. He was a member of Board of Directors of Farmers State Bank and was the co-owner of Mountain City Auto Mart. Ray was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge No. 243, Scottish Rite and the Shriners Jericho Temple. He also was a graduate of Lees-McRay College and he was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet Cress Payne: daughters and son-in-law, Janet Rhea Payne of Nashville, TN and Lynne Eunice Payne Phillips and husband Kenneth of Johnson City, TN; son, Dayton Timothy Payne of South Port, NC; grandchildren, Elizabeth Cable Nesmith and husband Ed of Jonesbourgh, TN, Katherine Rose Stout of Nashville, TN and Amelia Ruth Stout of Memphis, TN; great grandchildren, Hunter, Hannah and Grant Nesmith, all of Jonesbourgh, TN and Dayton James Cable of Elizabethton, TN; sisters, Nola Payne King and husband Allen of Bristol, TN, Jody Payne Forrester and husband Jim of Ootlewah, TN and Jane Payne Winters and husband Howard of Mountain City; brothers, James Richard Payne and wife Debbie of Benton, TN and John David Payne and wife Joan of Mountain City; several nieces and nephews and many, many close friends. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2014, from the First Baptist Church with Pastors Harry Wills, Michael Icenhour, Ricky Campbell and Norm Reece officiating. The Masonic Rites will follow and will be accorded by Taylorsville Masonic Lodge No. 243. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, prior to the service. Graveside Service and Interment will follow the funeral service on Monday from the Payne Cemetery with Pastors Homer Vanover and Spencer Roark officiating. Military Graveside Rites will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be the members of the Men's Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of Farmers State Bank, Malcolm Howard, Bobby and Conner Stout, Todd Grayson, J. R. Arnold, Perry Stout, Jim Cress, Robert Cress, Jack Cress and Ronnie Arnold.
